A hissing echo, already fading into the vast emptiness of the basement levels of the Capital, is so out of place that Peeta freezes, his heart feeling like it’s trying to jump through his chest. It sounds like something akin to a snarl, and he’s back in the arena, facing canine Mutts with Tribute eyes, or in the sewers, with a swarm of lizard-people, coming for his heart.
