Summary
A magnetic event of some kind has temporarily knocked out most electronics onboard and forced Rocky into a coma. Grace now has to navigate first contact with Erid alone, with no software to translate his words to the Eridians at the space elevator until Mary can run diagnostics on everything. But he’s not panicking! He can still speak (simplified, childish) Standard Equatorial Ran, so this should still be salvageable. Sure, he doesn't sound that great, but they can understand him. Right?
The alien child believes the engineer is its mate, and the ships logs have records of the crimes committed. The situation is dire. Immediate intervention is needed.

His jacket is missing too, which is a shame, because Phil bought him that one last Christmas. “There’s- ok. There’s a lot of blood. Huh.”
“Oh my fucking god.” Phil says, concern turning sharp. “You’re actively bleeding? Is it bleeding badly?”
“Well. Define badly.”

Summary
A common misconception about birds is that, because they are incapable of seeing glass, they run directly into it. In reality, the bird-glass conundrum is much different than the average person may know. The real reason why birds crash into glass at full speed is due to their lack of visual cues. The bird mind does not process a frame, nor cracks in the glass, nor a mirror’s reflections. The bird perceives the glass as real and, as a result, slams straight into it.
And that, for Phil, is the predicament.
or, I thought it was funny that birds run into glass and then did too much research on it so here we are.

“Oh.” Phil says, for lack of words, because it’s been a bit of a while since he’s seen kids. Three pairs of wide eyes stare back at Phil, terror given at the bloody display before them, the fangs of his teeth bared, the red splattered over his lips, the still warm body held in his claws.
“Oh, hello.” Phil grins. The smallest one opens his mouth and screams.
(Or, Vampire!Phil is trying to get by in a zombie apocalypse with the great lack of humans. He decides to try raising his own food supply, after finding three kids. It’s definitely not adoption. No, not at all. (Well, maybe just a bit.))
