Sadly it seems like fate likes to play with its favorite little thread. the Moirai have watched him fight for years. They whispered in the gods ears to offer him godhood, to finally reward him and give him just what he wished. but time and again he refused. Now they take maters into their own hands. The tapestry unwound and Percy is given everything he wished. Even if it's not exactly how he pictured it.

Poseidon’s face fell, as he held out a hand to his son.
“Percy, calm down —“
Percy turned, and the creaking and sputtering ceased, as if it never existed in the first place. Silent tears dripped down his face.
Poseidon’s mind fails. He slowly gets up — like a predator before the prowl — and staggers over to his heaving son, guiding him to the couch.
“ — Dad —“Poseidon shushes him, gently laying him down as he crouches in front of his face. His fathers eyes violently shifted. They were no longer those soft, sea green eyes Percy saw in the mirror, no — these were turbulent and fierce — and they had a goal.

The Big Three Gods forming a pact due to the prophecy, they solemnly swore not to bear children due to their dangerous, all consuming animalistic instincts that activate whenever they father a child. Due to this, there are significantly less demigods - and those who are born are raised by their godly parents. Poseidon, who had never before had a child (besides Triton, Rhodes, and Kymopoleia), had Percy with Sally, whom they raised together. Percy has always dealt with his fathers overwhelming protectiveness, but once his powers start to manifest, they rapidly intensify.

Summary
While on a trip in Montauk, Sally is killed protecting Percy from a monster. Three year old Percy witnessing this lets out an immense divine storm burning up his mortality and ascending into a godling. Poseidon who arrived moments too late realizes his once demigod son whom he could previously not be around is now a godling and alone. He immediately whisks Percy away before anyone notices to raise him in Atlantis.
