“I look at the Christmas lights and think of him,” Dazai opens his eyes slightly, still somewhat unfocused from the alcohol, it’s watery now, but he’s not crying. He stays quiet after that, like he’s conjuring Odasaku’s face onto the ceiling to stare at.

That seems to finally get Dazai to snap out of his thoughts, “What?”
Or; Chuuya picks Dazai up from Lupin bar on Christmas night.

Set in (modern) Japan, Guren tries to live on after Mahiru's death. Shinya works himself too hard trying to stay alive while hiding from the Hiiragis. Mika recovers from a car accident that he doesn't even remember only to wake up and find out that he's been in a coma for two months while Yuu tries to live the normal life of an ignorant brat despite his past.
Nobody would have predicted that the Bathory Coffee Shop or, in other words: Shinya's workplace, would be the place for these (miserably empty) people to meet up and change one another, little by little.

Dazai Osamu does not make mistakes.
Correction—he makes mistakes very rarely. It is not often something happens that is out of his control, or unforeseen, or unplanned for. Some might call it compulsive, perhaps even obsessive, the focus with which he makes contingencies for his contingency plans. He prefers to think of it as being prepared. Pragmatic, even.
Like most things, though, this rule of thumb is thrown out the window when Chuuya is involved.

Summary
The mission was simple.
Capture the target. Hand them over. Go home.
It was supposed to be just another routine case.
Instead, Dazai disappeared, jumped into a pond, and somehow the Armed Detective Agency ended up bringing home a soaking wet, ragged child who looked exactly like their suicidal coworker.
The kid has a scalpel, trust issues, and absolutely no intention of staying.
