    Komaeda seems too surprised by the question to really take notice of the sudden and immediate cringe that snaps down Hinata’s spine at his own terrible choice of a conversation lead in.

    He sets his teacup down. “What *should* I be doing about it, Hinata-kun?”

    Komaeda is avoiding Hinata, which somehow doesn't stop all the sex they're having. Hinata tries to pretend this doesn't bother him as much as it does. Self-delusion is one of his new hobbies, like finding things he's bad at, mostly because the Venn diagram of things he’s good at, things that make him feel like a monster, and things that bore him is basically a circle.

    Komaeda needs to get a grip. Hinata needs a fucking nap.

    He turns. Komaeda is leaning against a table with his legs crossed, tilting dangerously on the back legs of the wooden chair. His eyes gleam like a lion, mouth not betraying his excitement. “Do you ever, Hinata-kun?” A few beats pass. A slow, glittering smile takes over his face. It has the shine a freshly-sharpened knife does when you grind it against marble.

    Something like you? his mind can’t help but run. He white-knuckles his styrofoam cup. Never. Not even me. He doesn’t say that. Komaeda hates reminders. “What are you doing here?” He bites back what are you doing up. He knows. He knows as he has ever since Kamukura found that damned file among all the others in the Hope’s Peak archives about their studies, the only one titled with Komaeda’s name. The only one without a picture.

    Hinata is the only Remnant who takes insomnia instead of nightmares when it comes to guilt and PTSD. One night, with a full moon over their island paradise, he goes looking for a drink to drown out the flashes of fire in his vision, the smell of gasoline smoke, the drag of decay beneath his feet.

    Turns out he wasn't the only one looking for a drink.
