“What was that?” Haley says, idly wrapping a strand of her hair around her finger. She imagines Leah’s hands braiding her hair, separating it, pushing each curl away from her face, soft and gentle and a type of intimacy she’s never let herself have.
(There are many things Haley has asked for, and there are many things Haley has wanted; many things she has ached for. The two rarely overlap.)
“I asked,” Leah says, a little clearer, “if you would do my make-up. For the party. I’ve got this character I want to dress up as, and…” she trails off, waving her hand in the air.
Haley tilts her head, as if imagining it. In truth, she already knows what she will say. She has never been able to say no to Leah; rarely, in fact, has she allowed herself to say no to anyone. “Oh, I suppose I could do that. But I want a deal.”

Sam rolled his eyes. “Please, the monsters only live in the caves. They rarely ever wander out, and even if they did, it should be Seb thats worried.” Abigail shrugged, but didn’t retract her statement.
