Summary
Samira Mohan doesn’t think she’ll ever be marked. Her parents weren’t and they are happy enough. It all seems silly to her anyway, Prince Charming running after Cinderella because he saw a mark on her foot that matched his or Snow White’s prince thinking it was alright to kiss her unconsenting, sleeping mouth because of the apple on her collarbone that matched the one on his hip.

Summary
Jack’s finalizing handover with Robby at the hub when the call goes off. As with everything in the ED, signs of distress are met with a calm focus that lends itself to years of experience. The room doesn’t flinch. Jack looks at Dana, who casually looks up at the board and shoves her pen into her scrub pocket.
“I thought Mohan took Central 9.”
What follows is a chain reaction of events.
There’s a cry for help. It’s more like a scream and the sound of it is shocking enough to break through the controlled chaos of the department, because it’s not one of pain or grief; it’s terror. It makes the hair on Jack’s neck stand up as he jerks his head towards it, a hard feat for a man who has witnessed some of the worst things a person could imagine and lived with the PTSD of it. In that second, everything splinters. Jack’s feet are already moving towards Central 9, Robby and Langdon sprinting close behind. He spots Ahmad, running at speed across the corridor, and it’s the adrenaline that helps block the pain signals to his brain where his prosthesis meets his limb as his feet pound the floor.

Summary
Jack Abbot has spent a long time convincing himself that keeping his distance from Samira Mohan is the right thing to do.
She was his resident. His friend. Someone younger, brilliant, kind, and far too easy to miss. And Jack knows better than most that wanting someone new after loss can feel a little too much like betrayal.
But when Samira comes back to Pittsburgh, the distance between them no longer feels careful.
It feels like fear.
So Jack asks her to dinner.
One quiet restaurant, one rainy walk home, and one night that changes what they are willing to admit.

They both agreed to just one time. Get it out of their systems and then go back to work like it never happened.
This is the story of that.

The car ride was a study in barely contained tension—a painting titled “Want” that she would mull over in a gallery, appreciating the artist’s finer nuances and attention to detail. The city slid past the windows, streetlights flashing over his white knuckles clenched tight around the steering wheel, red headlights trailing over her legs angled toward him just enough to be provocative, and over his other hand which was placed—almost possessively—high up on Samira’s thigh

Summary
“Hey.”
Samira’s shoulders drop at the familiar voice, and despite the fatigue tugging her down and the horror of whatever the fuck is in her hair, a smile creeps onto her face. She turns to look at Jack, walking from the door over to her with his arms crossed over his chest.
The company is the only good part of a night shift, in her opinion.

Summary
Samira rolled her eyes, “Okay.” She gently began tending to the wound, “our little secret.”
Jack’s eyebrows rose slightly, and a flicker of amusement and disbelief crossed his face. “Our little secret,” he echoed. “I’ve heard that before.”
Her face heated. She tried to focus on the wound, dabbing it with the Q-tip. She was so close that she could smell his cologne again. It had faded from her pillowcase. His voice brought her back to the moment: “Do you still have my card details saved?”
“Huh?”
“For the Uber? Do you still have my card on your phone?”

Summary
Little to nothing surprised Samira Mohan at this point. She was almost certain that her brain had beaten the chemical out of her entirely.
So, one must understand, when the first thing in fifteen years to surprise Samira Mohan was a disagreement with Jack Abbot, she was pretty fucking taken aback.

Summary
Samira Mohan’s life is divided cleanly into two distinct halves: before PittFest and after it. She will never again be the person she was when she clocked in for that shift. She will never forget the give of her patient’s skull beneath an EZ-IO or the slip of the pigtail catheter between her fingers. Even months later, she’s still struggling to unpack all the ways that day changed her life.
Perhaps the strangest residual effect is that Jack Abbot sort of, inexplicably, becomes her best friend.

Summary
Downward dog on a single leg had been challenging at first, but now, Jack Abbot was nailing it with the grace of a pink flamingo on a meditation break. Bent naked on his terrace, he didn’t think about how Dr. Mohan was far away, about how he could never reach her again, never even gravitate around her delightfully solar presence again. After nearly fifteen years of celibacy, it wasn’t that big of a deal.
… was it ?

Summary
Jack must’ve jinxed it. He wanted something else to steal his attention from the handover, and that wish seems to have been granted in the form of a yelp of pain.
Jack's head snaps up in search of the source of the sound. It’s loud enough to have grabbed the attention of everyone in the vicinity. No traumas have come in since he arrived, so whoever made that sound is likely to be in urgent need of his assistance.
And that’s when he sees it. Samira. She’s stumbling out of a patient's room, clutching at her right side, collapsing into Langdon, who catches her before she can fall to the floor.
Or, with a rift caused by Samira's impending departure, Jack witnessing an injury at shift change might be the catalyst needed for them to bridge the gap.

“You could offer me a cup of tea…” he murmured, his voice dropping low enough that it seemed to vibrate through her skin. “And I would accept it... And we would ignore the tea.”
