Behind him, he heard a splash, and he whipped around. He locked eyes with someone; a boy, in the water up to his shoulders, wet, black hair hanging limply, skin strangely gray like it had taken on the color of the water. He didn’t look completely there, somehow, as though he was translucent like the water, too, yet more solid. Wide eyes regarded him, the whites like shards of mother-of-pearl around irises with the depth and color of a midnight sky.
All this he saw in an instant, and before he could utter a word, the boy vanished like he’d never been there at all, and Jughead would have thought his mind was playing tricks if the water hadn’t splashed when the kid disappeared. Maybe it still was.

Summary
Jughead’s breath caught in his throat, panic squeezing tight around his chest as his heart was battered against his ribs by his own hammering pulse. He cried for mercy, pleaded, begged, explicitly revoked consent he had never given in the first place, dammit, but no reprieve would come. The hatch clanged shut with grim finality, sealing Jughead in the bunker with his own gathering demons.
