As he walked, he couldn't help noticing that almost everyone was looking at him. The stares weren't malicious, though, so he paid them little mind. He had been on the receiving end of enough different kinds of looks throughout his life to recognize them. These weren't judgmental.
If anything, they seemed... amused. And strangely fond. He could even hear a few quiet chuckles as he walked past.

Men who didn’t smell like motor oil and clay dust and cigarettes, men who could take him to parties in polo shirts and nice clean cars. Naim would never have to take the bus again. Roiling, hot jealousy fills his head for this nameless, faceless man, Naim’s future boyfriend. He’d probably play the guitar or something. Write Naim stupid songs. Shit like that. Ryan feels sick.
Since leaving Bandee an over a year ago, they’ve never spent a single night apart. Naim’s University orientation might change that.

For the rest of the afternoon he turns the scene over and over in his head. It shouldn’t bother him. It was a 20 second interaction in his 9 hour workday. He’s never going to see her again. Maybe it would bother him less if she didn’t wear the same shade of lipstick as his mother, or if her stupid outfit wasn’t the same color as his grandma's dining room curtains, or if kind smiles from older women didn’t strike a raw cord of longing in his chest.
Maybe if not for the cruel reminder that God doesn’t love him. Maybe if not for the fact that he still cares about receiving God’s love.
Loving Naim is a sin that strangers feel Ryan should repent for. Ryan seeks comfort the only way he knows how.
