Summary
So that’s it, huh.
Mira does a better job at stifling her tears than Zoey, but she still feels a few warm drops run down her cheeks.
The hopes and dreams of being an idol at Sunlight Entertainment—hell, of being anything—are gone with a handwave from some guy in a suit and a paper that says “Thanks for auditioning”.
Before she can storm out as quickly as possible to save what little face she has left, Mira turns on her heel and freezes at the sight of Celine, the CEO of Sunlight Entertainment, watching her. That odd woman with the purple braid and mask floats behind her, eyes gleaming.
“Mira. Zoey.” Celine steps towards them. “Before you leave, I have an offer I’d like you to consider.”
Or: When Mira and Zoey, both running from difficult pasts, audition to become idols at Sunlight Entertainment (famous for its mysterious headliner idol Hunter) and fail, all hopes of meeting and training under Hunter go out the window until Celine makes them a different, surprise offer: train under Celine’s unknown ward Rumi instead.
(“Why us?” Zoey asks.
“Honestly,” Rumi says, “I think you're both really weird.”

She had an enormous iced coffee in one hand, the plastic cup sweating against her fingers. The straw, unfortunately, was bent almost completely flat. Rumi gave it an experimental sip. Schllluuurrrrp. Then she tried again. SCHLLLUUUURP.
Zoey slowly turned her head.
Mira's eye twitched. “Can we please save the drinking for after the recording?”
“My straw is broken,” Rumi said.
“That sounds like a problem for after the recording.”

Mira discovers TikTok challenges, she insists on doing every challenge perfectly. Zoey deliberately sabotages them. Rumi accidentally goes viral for aggressively sipping iced coffee in the background.

Rumi's meeting gets cut short and she comes home early. Zoey and Mira are not expecting her.
"She knew Mira. She knew. 3 years she's known and known and said NOTHING." The final word was another scream, another wrenching full body swing of the mace.
"We weren't exactly forthcoming ourselves."
"3 years of thinking we didn't want her, that we chose to not have her, that we were hiding from her."
"We were hiding." We did choose.
The mace swings again, two handed, shaft flexing under the blow.
"3 years of choking back the screams, crying into pillows, sneaking about, lying. Trying to get Bobby to set up that trust without asking any questions. Oh god Mira, is this why she never comes to the bathhouse? Is she giving us space to get our freak on?"
"Maybe. We have after all. Remember Busan?"
"Not helping Mira!"
