Summary
“Gege!” The stranger says, cheerful and incredibly familiar. “Is the water warmer on that side?”
Not thinking much about it, Xie Lian sticks his hand in the river. The fish scatter underneath him. “I can’t say if it’s warmer but it is quite warm.” He doesn’t explicitly mention that it’s been almost a year since he’s felt the current on the other side and so would have no way of knowing.
But his answer seems adequate enough—the youth perks up and rises to his feet. “I thought the sun shined brighter on gege’s side! Would you mind if I joined you over there?”
“Not at all,” Xie Lian responds in turn. “I have to warn you though, it’s a long way around. And the sun is to set in a few hours, perhaps the time it would take for you to get here is better spent getting home.”
Not a second after Xie Lian finishes his sentence, the boy laughs. Settling into a grin, he says, “Gege, what’s there to do? I was kicked out today, I’m afraid there’s no better way to spend my time.”

Lan Wangji appreciates how clearly Wei Wuxian allows Lan Wangji to perceive when he is pleased. Lan Wangji had worried, at first, that he would not know how best to be good to Wei Wuxian, that Wei Wuxian was used to accepting so little without complaint. He didn’t want things to be adequate. He wanted to make Wei Wuxian’s life everything he deserves. But Wei Wuxian does his best to leave Lan Wangji with no doubt. It is like the bunnies, in some ways; a happy Wei Wuxian will lie flat, will reveal his vulnerable underbelly.
