Summary

Summary
Pentagram City, 1940s.
Alastor de Mon keeps his professional life as a forensic pathologist separate from his personal life as a frequent theatre-goer and reluctant see-er of ghosts. When a murder occurs on the doorstop of his favourite theatre, his companionable enmity with the critic who shares his theatre box is threatened—but that’s nothing compared to the chaos following Charlie Morningstar’s decision to recreate the famous production of Macbeth that ended with her mother’s murder. As the original cast (the living ones, anyway) reunite at the Morningstar Theatre, threats and accusations soon follow. With Alastor’s closest frenemy now the chief suspect in his wife’s murder, he must decide if this is sabotage or the supernatural—and whether he can trust Lucifer. Whatever the case, this is certain: something evil inhabits the Morningstar Theatre.

Angel lifted his head only to freeze on spotting Charlie’s rectangle. “Holy shit! Is that a fuckin’ cellphone?!”
Charlie gave a nervous laugh. “Yeah. You don’t have a charger do you?”
He pointed an accusing finger at Alastor, eyes narrowing. “How come the new girl gets t’keep her phone? Ya said none of that shit exists around here!”
“It doesn’t,” Alastor said, flabbergasted.
Charlie’s gaze darted between them. “…okay, this isn’t a cult or something, is it…? I’m just so busy between work and school, I don’t have time to join a cult right now.”
Angel’s shoulders sagged. “Nobody told ya yet…?”
“Told me what?”
“That you’re dead.”
She didn’t laugh this time. “What?”
“Everybody here’s dead.“

A living girl walks into a coffee shop for the dead... Unfortunately for Alastor, the head of a village of ghosts, Charlie’s arrival isn’t the setup for a punchline. Though she vows to lay the wayward souls to rest, he expects she'll be a blip in his century of life after death. He’s unprepared for the changes she brings, the most obnoxious being a man who looks just like her.

Lucifer is not FINE. He’s literally in over his head. The line to the club, which they’re currently standing in, is a MOB of unknown, sweaty, disgusting bodies. There are sinners EVERYWHERE. It’s like driving through a valley lined with sneering, toothy, hungry-looking trees with dozens of beady, glowing eyes.
He's going to DIE.
“This is going to be so amazing,” Charlie gushes. She makes eye contact with him over her shoulder and grins wide.
Lucifer tries to muster a return grin that looks enthusiastic and not as if he’s a single social interaction from developing stress fractures in his jaw.
