Summary
Gimli turned in surprise, ready to wield his axe, only to face the quiet and somber face of an elf. But something seemed off. His voice had been strained when he called out, almost as if he were sick (which Gimli, who was not an idiot, knew it was very rare for elves to get sick), and it alarmed him. The elf's eyes were a bit puffy as well, Gimli noted, as well as a bit of a disheveled look opposed to his usual, poised stature.
Oh.
It hit him like a brick. Legolas, he realized, had been crying.
TLDR; Legolas is grieving the death of Gandalf and finds comfort in someone surprising.
