Summary
Humans, I decided a long time ago, are absurd. But the strangest thing about them, I think, isn’t their inclination to share meals together (disgusting) or their constant need for sleep. Not even their inability to properly speak. No, I decided long, long ago. The worst part about humans is their determination to throw themselves into places where they aren’t meant to be.
(Or, Rocky thinks Grace is drowning. Unfortunately for Grace, he isn’t.)

Slowly starving to death in space means you’re cold all the time. Thankfully, Grace has a very warm and very smart alien friend who’s determined to fix that.

Summary
When he lifts himself, I think nothing of it. I pull my feet back to give him space to adjust, because Eridians, just like humans, need to move sometimes for no other reason than that their previous position became uncomfortable.
Then he whacks my knee with the back of his hand, and I jolt so hard I nearly fall back in my chair.
Within milliseconds, I’ve banged my leg against the underside of the desk, cried out in both pain and surprise, and beaten the heel of my other foot down on Rocky’s carapace like a child throwing a tantrum, sending him fleeing from under my desk with a dissonant noise of complaint. There’s no way for me to hurt him harmlessly, the way feuding siblings do, so it’s become second nature to mess with his senses whenever I feel the urge to do something akin to punching someone’s shoulder.
“The fuck was that for?” Rocky asks, and I genuinely splutter for a few moments before the words come to me.
“What do you mean, what was that for?! I should be asking you that!”

Or: Rocky learns about the patellar reflex. Grace is in the unfortunate position of being the only mammal on the planet for him to test it out on.

Summary
I never noticed. There are no mirrors in my house; there are no mirrors anywhere on Erid, at least not in the sense that we understand them. There’s reflective surfaces, but not intentionally so. My attention has been tugged this way and that, always something new to discover, or else something new to research in the endless encyclopedia I was left with. I had no reason to look at my own body beyond what was necessary to keep it clean.
But now I’m sitting here, and it stares me in the face. Emphasized by my position, my stomach rises up and over my waistband, forming a soft mass that spills slightly over my sides.
“Oh,” I say out loud. I run a hand over this new pudge that probably isn’t new at all, startling slightly at the texture of it. Soft. Yielding. Slightly cold from the water evaporating on it. I touch my body like it isn’t my own, because for a long, long time, it wasn’t. I touch it the way Rocky touched me once he finally had the option to, committing everything to memory, matching it to what he already knew.
/////
Or: In the two years that he spent on Erid, Grace has changed in just about every way imaginable. But one way in particular feels more significant than the rest.
