Summary
Your grip tightens on the foam handles. The chained links of the fence tower many feet into the air. You won’t climb. You’ll break. Grunting, the cold nips at your reddening fingers. The diamond-shaped wiring snaps beneath the tool’s beak, diagonally working up a few feet and then all around. You sniffle as the cold clamps its jaws at every inch of exposed skin. Why did winter start early this year? Stiffening fingers drop the bolt cutters and you push at the fence, doing your best not to cut your numbing skin.
The cold and you aren’t friends. Neither is the idea of upsetting anyone hospitable to you. Neither is each second of not knowing what your siblings are going through. You’ll do what you do best: You’ll silently remove yourself from the situation. Silently, right?
