He wasn't surprised when she told him that she couldn't. That she had to help Harry, he was surprised when he stayed in Britain refusing his mother's pleas to come with her.
It was irrational, it went against his very nature, but he knew that if his witch was going to put herself in danger he would need to stay and protect her as best he could.
