Summary
It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.

"Yeah?" Shane feels himself bristle. His acceptance into a men's league last year as a trans man did get some low-level news coverage. He stands straighter, ready for some insult about -
"Mm, yes. My friend took me to see final of your league last year. Very neat goal for your hat-trick." The man - Rozanov, Hayden had said - takes a slow sip of his clear drink. "But backhand is a bit weak."
"Weak?" Shane scoffs. It's his best move.
"Yes. Is okay, I will teach you. Maybe let you onto first line...eh, once or twice during season, for the boring games."
"That's not happening." Shane feels anger running under his skin, but relief as well, that the guy was just chirping his hockey skills. "Thanks for your generous offer, though."

Summary
Newly traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, Ilya Rozanov is so close to having everything he’d never thought he was allowed to want. He can see the man he loves more than four times a year, he’s surrounded by a team who supports him through his injury, and Shane’s parents have unhesitatingly accepted him as part of the family.
