Summary
Gustave lifts his eyes to his lips, plump with wine—wonders the taste of tonight's vintage—then farther up and there, Verso's eyes are a striking azure under moonlight.
"Well? What are you waiting for?" Verso taunts with a smirk. "Go on. Make my day."
Verso Dessendre is one of Paris' favorite sons and it's in character for him to extend an invitation to someone like Gustave to a simple evening with his friends.
The implication runs deeper and they're aware of it.

Summary
“Will you not change your earring?” He asks. The accessory dangles on Vanitas' ear, the light reflecting on its hourglass.
It is the wrong thing to say, because Vanitas’ expression shutters and a void makes itself known in Noé’s stomach.
(Noé learns to thread past the invisible walls Vanitas has. He fears one day he'll finally run into one.)
Or:
A letter brings Vanitas and Noé to the Altus Parisian opera.

Summary
Yet, Verso sights the apple of his eye: Gustave Galliard—an enigma of a man. A genuine character in the roster of the villains among the Writer faction. He curls his lips with that crooked grin of his and his words are passionate, far from his peers' deceit.
This is where Monsieur Gustave commits his fatal mistake: he meets Verso's gaze earnestly and flashes him his smile.
It sets them both on the path of their own doom.

Summary
"Other resistance groups are guessing the Allies will land at Normandy, not at Pas-de-Calais."
Vanitas' breath hitches.
"Whatever plan you have to get the fella out, do it now," Dante gravely reminds him. "You're running out of time."
The year is 1944 and the world is at war. Noé is taken by the Germans. Vanitas rescues him.

It’s enough to make him smile again, the light flooding back. “Verso,” Gustave breathes. “You can’t kiss me now.”
It feels presumptuous, even now, but Gustave knows that he isn’t misinterpreting the heat in Verso’s eyes - and he knows that there’s only one way to read the frustrated, confused sound that fires between Verso’s lips.
Gustave blinks and tries to focus. “If you kiss me, we’re going to burn through a whole lot of pages.”

Summary
The rain in the Writer’s District did not fall; it was dictated. It descended in straight, unrelenting lines, driven by a sky that looked less like clouds and more like spilled ink on wet parchment.
Gustave stood at the edge of the congregating crowd, the black wool of his mourning coat already heavy with dampness. He kept his left hand—the brass and piston construct—shoved deep into his pocket. The cold weather always made the metal contract, sending sharp, phantom aches shooting up from the mechanical forearm into the living flesh of his shoulder. He welcomed the pain. It was a grounding tether, a reminder that he was still here, even if the only person in this city who tolerated him was not.

Bookmarker's Notes
He had spent his entire life seeing music as rigid syntax, dissecting sound into structural equations and variables. But as Verso poured his soul into the sweeping, romantic crescendo of the sonata, the math simply dissolved.
Gustave didn't see equations. He saw the dream.

Summary
He loved when Gustave was asleep because he got to study all the paint that constructed his face and all pigment that sculpted his muscles for what it really was. It was during such nights that Verso understood his emotions like no other time that they seemed like a force he could conquer because they were only subconscious responses of his blueprinted human mind to the piece of art labelled 'Gustave 'by a bloody, silver plate in this menagerie of grief and self-loathing. It was those nights he loved him.
— Say, Verso, do you think I was worth saving?
or; Verso isn't doing well, we know, so he walks out at night wanting to jump off a cliff, but Gustave's kinda battling his own demons too

How broken had he become that, when the purest of souls with the most forgiving, brown eyes to ever have grazed his vision went to pick up the shards of his broken heart, he flung them at Gustave's face and buried a piece of his sorrow in the muscles twitching around a compassionate smile?

Summary
You first notice the flowers in the morning of the first night that you spend back in your bed. They are hard to miss: dark-crimson petals litter the floor of your bedroom. The air smells of roses. You rub your face with your hand. A dark red rose appears, fully formed and fresh, on your bed covers. You do not think of it. You close your eyes and will yourself back to sleep.
After Sophie's death, Gustave takes to making flowers appear out of thin air instead of talking about his feelings.

He will not come back, you know. It shouldn’t surprise you. After all, you are an ancient Aztec sacrifice, and he is the cruel sun god. What good are you to him when he’s ripped out your heart and burned it down, and you have nothing else to give?
