    Summary

Because it's good news, right? That no one has told him that Ilya is— There probably would have been headlines. Or a press release. A photo of him in his jersey, smiling, two dates only twenty-eight years apart, a few lines about his career, and no listed survivors. Supportive tweets from a bunch of people in the league. Shane's team would put out a press release about the foundation and probably get a flood of donations. There would be something, if he were—

But there's nothing. There's just this void. Nothing, nothing, no sign of him. It's like Ilya has disappeared off the face of the earth.

    Summary

Following an afternoon of sex and tuna melts, Shane goes searching for the explicit rules of what being 'friends with benefits' entails. In his humble opinion, they're nailing it.

Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?

A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.

"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”

He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"

    Summary

The Boxing Day argument changes everything.

This time: there is no emergency Centaur plane landing. No moment of clarity. No grand realization waiting around the corner.

Instead, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov come to terms with the fact that they are not on the same page about their relationship. Ilya, the physical touch king, is ready to stop hiding. Shane, the reserved, this-needs-a-15-step-plan king, still needs more time.

    So they break up.

Ilya throws himself into therapy, starts taking antidepressants, adopts a dog, befriends a very attractive new reporter, and develops a newfound commitment to living authentically. Shane is left wondering: what happens when hockey, the thing that’s always defined him, no longer feels like enough?

A canon-divergent story beginning after the Boxing Day argument in The Long Game.

    Summary

“If he’s internally decapitated, he’s dead,” Shane huffs, tossing his arm out at the television. “Why are they saying they can save him?”

    Ilya chuckles. “Doctor Hollander, huh?”

“I’d be a great doctor, thank you,” Shane quips back.

“Not one of these doctors. You would be a great ear doctor, or something. Whatever doctor is most boring.”

“Oh, fuck you!” Shane mock-gasps at him, kicking a pillow into his side. Ilya cracks up, smacking Shane’s thigh lightly.

This is fine, Shane thinks. It was a one-time thing. We’re okay.

But later, when he’s in bed, that feeling, the one he had when he first saw Ilya kissing Sasha, comes back.
