Summary
Here's the part that Philza dropped: instead of being valiantly struck down by lightning like his letter said, the only thing that got destroyed from the first strike was the boat itself. Its sole passenger had fled the moment the light found its mark.
Philza didn't choose fight. His dark, crow-like wings spread, and he flew himself high into the air.
Which was a stupid move, really – all that did was to make him more of a target of the relentless attacks. So was it really unexpected when the next bolt hit him square in his wing? Was it really unexpected when he was swallowed by the raging waves?

Philza is a poor fisherman whose boat and body got absolutely obliterated by a random storm from nowhere. Technoblade is his rescuer-turned-unwilling-roommate. They bond over random things in their lives as Phil heals, and over time, they may find a new family in their roommate as well.
Also Techno is a siren. Phil may or may not have taken it as a joke.

They’re leaning against the wooden railing of his balcony, overlooking the serenity of the lowering sun, heads full of a simple summer buzz that seemed to infiltrate every corner. Juan swiftly turns. His body facing Foolish, attentive, with his hands slipping from the railing and face laced in open concern—it’s more emotion than he should be comfortable with showing so freely, but with them alone, he rips down every reservation. Together like this, they’re just Juan and Foolish. Nothing more. Nothing less.
