Illuga knew death well; he had seen it far too many times to count. For humans, it was simple: the living were living, and the dead were dead. It’s a strictly one-way progression. Hard to accept, but easy to comprehend.
“Lohen is alive,” Varka had said. Illuga clung to those three words like a lifeline as he waited for hours and hours, which turned into days and days, until finally, finally, Lohen’s eyes opened.
A part of Illuga immediately sensed that Lohen was different, though he didn’t want to believe it. A part of Illuga immediately felt that something was off, though he couldn’t understand why. A part of Illuga would later realize that Varka was wrong.
In a way, Lohen had died that day.
And just like the dead, he was gone.

Not for the first time, Illuga thinks there must be something wrong with him. Maybe he’s been possessed by the Wild Hunt. Maybe the kuuvahki is finally getting to him; one too many mandragoras, or something like that.
Either way, there has to be a reason. Why else would Illuga keep letting Lohen into his bed? Why else would Illuga allow Lohen to use his body again and again, leaving Illuga with bruised skin, aching bones, and a weary heart?
‘Friends with benefits’ is a phrase he’s heard before, and it makes sense. The life of a Lightkeeper can be cold and lonely, so it’s only natural to seek warmth and comfort from another. But Illuga never expected to find himself in such an arrangement, if what they have can even be called that. Lohen’s rough treatment offers no benefits, and they certainly aren’t friends. Illuga doesn’t even like him.
This can’t possibly be what Flins had in mind when he suggested that Illuga take up a new hobby.

“The first tenet of my assignment,” Valeriy cuts in, “was your safety. We may have forgotten it over the course of these years, but escorting you back to work was always the secondary task.”
Mitya looks away. The snowstorm is still going.
Valeriy sets down the containers on his table, his motions slow and unpracticed. “If it is my role to protect you from your own mind,” he continues, quietly, “then understand that I will be there.”
“You’re taking on an… impossible task, Sarge.” Mitya’s scarf wraps around himself a little more tightly, as if trying to reassure him. He’s not sure that it’s succeeding. “You shouldn’t. I’ve always been crazy. They knew that too. It’s a small price to pay, to see our world freed from these curses.”
Valeriy does not say anything, but Mitya knows he disagrees.

Never again. And it’s not going to help me to revisit old topics-”
An idea comes to Valeriy in that moment.
“Teach me,” Valeriy blurts.
Mitya stops and stares at him. “What?”
“Teach me.” Valeriy repeats. “You said you need to feel as though you’re making progress. That you needed to entertain thought without getting bored, without getting into complicated science that could put Snezhnaya’s people at risk. Would my education be tangible enough?”
Suddenly, he feels very stupid all over again. “Of course, if you’d rather not-”
“No! No, Valeriy, I-” Mitya stops, and corrects himself, and he’s smiling, just a little. “Sarge. Archons, Sarge, I would love to.”

“Not in the club,” Suguru says like a promise. Satoru deliberately moves so that her strap falls off her shoulder again. Suguru laughs, easy, and fixes it for her again. She looks at Satoru like she’s sizing her up. Satoru bites her tongue. “Please tell me you’re going to let me take you home and fuck you, Satoru,” Suguru says in a low voice. Satoru’s name rolls off her tongue so pretty, half a purr. “Dress on or off, I really don’t care.”
“Well, that depends,” Satoru answers, trying to keep her composure. She plucks her cherry out of her drink and rests it against her lower lip, rolls it onto her tongue. Watches Suguru watch her.
“Depends?” Suguru asks, hand sliding back to the small of Satoru’s back pulling her closer. Her fingers are almost possessive, the tips of them digging in, right at the top of Satoru’s ass. Satoru likes it. She likes it a lot.
“Yeah, depends how many times you’re gonna make me come,” Satoru says, as casually as she can. She feels like a livewire.

"No?" Suguru asks, incredulous, tipping his chin toward his chest.
"No," Satoru huffs.
"You literally just reminded me how much you like it when I do." Suguru quips, gesturing behind them.
