“Do you want Ilya?” Jackie asks.
“I… I don’t want what comes with him,” Shane says honestly. “I’m out. I’m happy I’m out. I’m not going to be anyone’s secret hookup.”
“And if he wants more than that?”
“If he did, he wouldn’t be Ilya Rozanov.”
It’s not fair of him to say that. If there’s one thing he’s reminded himself frequently the last few days, it’s that he doesn’t know Ilya anymore. But he knows himself; who he was when he knew Ilya and who he is now that he doesn’t. Shane’s the one who realized he’d spent his life growing sideways, and finally changed directions. He’s the one who learned he could go farther finding an equilibrium with his disabilities than by fighting them tooth and nail. He’s the one who accepted that he’d loved and lost, even if it was in hindsight.
But as far as he can tell, Ilya didn’t grow in any direction. Ilya stayed right where he was.
OR
An injury ended Shane's career and left him with a permanent disability and without Ilya. 4 years later, he's built an inclusive hockey camp and is living out and proud. But when a chance encounter brings Ilya back into his life, Shane wonders if the distance between them can be crossed.
