It was his only form of mercy. The sickeningly sweet burning scent that curled through his lungs was his only reprieve from the pain. Dutch didn't understand. Didn't like it when he snuck away from camp far enough downhill that the wind wouldn't reveal his secret. But when a body is slowly decaying from the inside out, comfort matters more than the fallout any drug could ever have.
Dutch comes to understand that much, at least.
