Summary
Nick and Selena are the first to fall victim to the retirement curse. Six months after Chewy hangs up on his skates, he shows up to the weekly Old Fucks Monks Meetup with a hangdog expression. “She filed yesterday,” he tells them.
Shane is appropriately sympathetic in the group, jumping up to grab another round whenever Chewy’s bottle gets low, making vague but good-sounding noises whenever Chewy says something depressing, but Ilya knows that gleam in his eyes.
"Out with it," Ilya says, once they're safely ensconced in the dark interior of Shane's car.
“I can’t believe they’re giving in,” Shane says, a touch of glee in his voice.

"Bears! Listen up!" Marly called, forcing everyone to crane their necks awkwardly to look to him. Ilya's stomach roiled with apprehension, text thread to Jane still open. "I know we've all heard the rumours about Hollander," he started, looking amongst them all. His face was serious and staid. "Well, I got something to say on the matter."
Ilya braced himself, knuckles white around the armrests. Marly had the ear of the locker room. When he spoke, everyone listened. He was everyone's favourite. It wouldn't take much for Marly to lead a riot against Shane, if he wanted.
Marly took a deep breath, looking amongst them all, and then, said a single word.
"Dibs."
Cliff Marleau calls dibs on Shane Hollander.
Ilya Rozanov loses his mind.

Of course Ilya wasn't going to choose him.
And now, he stood in their kitchen like a stranger, having to pretend be okay with the fact that Ilya went out and hooked up with Svetlana on a night meant to celebrate hockey's greatest. A party he wasn't even invited to as a captain himself.
He spent the entire day coming up with meticulous loopholes and justifications for something that was actually quite simple—nobody remembered. Shane was wholeheartedly forgotten and he was too proud, or maybe dense, to figure it out himself.
Or, the one where Ilya forgets Shane’s birthday. Coping ensues.

Shane took a deep breath. "So, I’ve been texting this girl Rose. And she asked for a picture of me in my underwear. But I… I haven’t done that before.”
He gulped back the shame, feeling unforgivably inexperienced. “So I have no idea how to do it right, and I thought you might… I dunno, have some tips or something.”
He shrugged it off, like it really didn’t matter. But inside he was a big ball of nerves. Would Ilya think he was a total idiot for not knowing how to do this himself by now?
Ilya's grin deepened, and it looked like he was growing fangs right before Shane’s eyes. “You have come to the right place, my friend. I will turn you into sexy selfie expert in no time.”
Shane gulped, already beginning to regret this.
Or: Shane needs all the help he can get when it comes to taking a sexy selfie. Luckily, his roommate Ilya is happy to teach him everything he knows.
