    This wasn’t the first time they had heard Zhangmen-shixiong accidentally call him 'Xiao Jiu', an affectionate nickname completely inappropriate for someone as harsh and unfriendly as Shen Qingqiu.

    “I agree with shixiong,” Mu Qingfang said, entirely unexpectedly. “I am… discomforted. I was not involved with Yue-shixiong’s care at this time. I know that at some point, he entered secluded cultivation in the Lingxi Caves, and underwent a technique to strengthen his cultivation and the bond between himself and his sword. I can only assume this was it.”
    Shen Qingqiu wanted to laugh hysterically. A technique to strengthen his cultivation! While he was having his cultivation base permanently warped by Wu Yanzi, his aptitude permanently wasting away with every month he did not enter a reputable sect, it turned out that the great Yue Qingyuan was having his already ridiculous abilities bolstered even further. No wonder Shen Qingqiu had been abandoned.

    Shen Qingqiu was a self-interested person; the threat of death just made him more so. He leaned forward to press his lips to Yue Qingyuan’s, slow and careful. Yue Qingyuan inhaled sharply, but didn’t jerk away. It was enough. Shen Qingqiu kissed him, trying to memorize how his mouth tasted and the softness of his lips.

    When he pulled back, Shen Qingqiu kept his eyes closed as he pressed their foreheads together. He didn’t want to know how Yue Qingyuan looked right now, whether he was disgusted or simply shocked.

    Shen Qingqiu tucked his head against Yue Qingyuan’s neck as he fisted his hands in his robe. “Save me,” he whispered.

    “You weren’t supposed to wake up,” Shen Jiu bitterly mutters. “I just need a place to sleep for tonight, and this place was convenient. Don’t make me regret it.” 

    After a beat of hesitation, Yue Qingyuan silently nods, not knowing whether the order to stay quiet still applies or not. Shen Jiu’s argument makes no sense, of course. The Head Disciple’s private residence all the way over on Qiong Ding cannot possibly be convenient for him, and-- and to be willing to share a bed with Yue Qingyuan-- 

    “Should I leave?” he whispers. 

    Shen Jiu tenses. 

    “Nevermind,” Yue Qingyuan quickly amends himself. “Sorry, forget I said anything.”

    Shen Jiu experiences a moment of weakness, and Yue Qingyuan tries not to make him regret it.
