“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”
And just like that, the bubble popped.
“I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.
He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

Summary
Michael Robinavitch's first impression of Dennis Whitaker wasn't made on the first day of his Emergency Medicine rotation. No, Robby had already known about Dennis for nearly a month before that.
He knew the abandoned hospital wing the boy called home. He knew the late-night routines, the terrible music choices, the way Dennis danced when he thought he was completely alone. He knew the little things no stranger should know. He knew the way he hummed while studying, the way he paced when he was thinking, the way he curled into himself when he slept. He knew far more than he ever should have.
And the worst part? Dennis didn't know him at all.
For weeks, Robby convinced himself it was concern. That he was only making sure the young med student was safe. That he was simply trying to understand why someone would choose to disappear into that forgotten corner of the hospital. But the truth was harder to ignore.
Robby had been watching Dennis. A silent observer of a life Dennis never knew anyone was seeing. A man in his fifties who should know better than to become infatuated with a stranger, let alone one half his age.
But Dennis Whitaker had never felt like just a stranger to Robby.

Robby considers it for a moment but he really can't say no to Dennis. He sighs and gestures to the back of the bike. "Hop on."
