Half-turned as he was, Ryoma couldn’t see all of Xander’s expression, but the glare he had been expecting was curiously absent. Instead, Ryoma saw in Xander’s eye a disarming gentleness, a complete lack of hatred and fire that was more chilling than anything Ryoma could have imagined.

“They fight for years. Never speaking. Never understanding one another. They rise in ranks,” Garen continued. “Eventually, one captures the other while in neutral territory. The story says the captive begs. Or the captor kills him.”
Bound hands tested the ropes again, shifting as he did. He tilted his head, looking at Darius through the firelight. “No one ever talks about what happens when neither of those things occurs.”
Instead of showing his agreement, Darius added another piece of wood to their fire. “Stories are for people who expect clean endings,” was all that he said.

He carefully removed the gauze covering its upper quadriceps and guided the Soldier into the oversized shower stall. It was capable of performing its own cleansing routines, but this handler had initiated shared showers early in their cohabitation. It was not irregular, except that all previous handlers had used this time for recreational purposes as well. The Captain seemed only to take satisfaction in thoroughly cleansing the body, as one might perform maintenance on a valuable rifle. A fitting comparison, if it had not jammed and misfired today.
