Summary
Will wades through his father’s sunflower field - sweaty, barefoot, heavy with child, and battered by the overbearingly humid fever of Louisiana’s summer - to call him inside for lunch. When he stops midway down the dirt path to catch his breath he senses a familiar presence lurking amid the tall, sun-facing stalks.
Hannibal had gotten him pregnant last Autumn. He refuses to talk about it much, not even to his own father, but he is just weeks shy of giving birth and far from being able to shoulder it on his own. Will persists, however, unwilling to face Hannibal for who he is.
