    Summary

The first time Jason realizes he's in trouble, Tim is asleep on his couch.

Not passed out after patrol. Not unconscious from blood loss. Not dragged there by an adrenaline crash or forced horizontal by a cracked rib. Just asleep — the way people sleep when they feel safe, when their body decides, on its own, without consulting anyone, here. this is a place I can let go.

One sock hangs halfway off his foot, dangling at the toe. His glasses sit crooked on the coffee table beside an untouched mug of tea that had gone cold an hour ago, the surface filmed over in a way that means it had been forgotten almost immediately after being made. One hand is tucked beneath his cheek, fingers curled loosely, like he was twelve years old instead of twenty-two.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    Look at these pretty sentences

“ He has been good at it, mostly. He has arranged his life around the specific freedoms of solitude — no one else's schedule, no one else's needs pressing against his own, no explanations required for the nights that go bad or the mornings that start at two in the afternoon. He had not known he was lonely. He is not sure he was lonely, exactly. He had simply been alone, and had made a kind of peace with it, the way you make peace with things that seem permanent.“

“ He thinks about all the ways he has learned to not get attached. The architecture of it. The early warning systems. The way he has arranged his life to minimize the surface area available for loss, which is a thing he does and knows he does and has mostly been fine about doing.”

    Summary

The address Ives had texted him led to a brownstone in Midtown that had probably cost more than Tim's entire college fund, which was saying something, because Tim's college fund was obscene.

He stood on the sidewalk for a moment, looking up at it. Light poured from every window. He could hear the low thrum of music even from here, something with enough bass to feel in his sternum. Someone laughed on the second floor — a bright, glittering sound, the kind of laugh that knew it was being heard.

    His phone buzzed.

Ives: I can see you standing on the sidewalk. Get up here.

"You must have a source," Duke said. "Tell us what it is."

"Okay, okay! I read about you guys. That's how I know that stuff."

    "Read about us? Where?"

"Online," the goon stammered. "Have—have you ever heard of AO3?"

Investigating a mysterious uptick in criminal knowledge of the Bats, Duke discovers the source of their information: fanfiction from Gothamites on AO3. Recruiting seasoned fanfic author Tim Drake and world's best hate commenter Damian Wayne, the three youngest Bats set out to spread misinformation, cause chaos, and snag a high hits-to-kudos ratio along the way.
