“So, what now?” Shane said, his voice lowering into a whisper now that the two were so close.
Ilya shrugged. “I don’t know,” he admitted. His gaze dropped briefly, not to Shane’s eyes, but to his lips. While the crowd was busy shouting around them, something in Shane clicked and he finally understood what was going on.
Shane had heard about Gay Chicken from a friend of a friend who’d played it at another party a while ago. From what he remembered, it consisted of two straight people getting progressively closer to one another until one of them essentially “chickened out” first. The loser was whoever backed away or decided they’d had enough.

Almost fell asleep watching Shane Hollander play. Is the most depressing man I know. Even his chirps are polite. Maybe he wouldn’t be so boring if he weren’t best friends with his mom?What the hell, Rozanov?
Shane grinds his teeth, desperate to keep his tears at bay. This is ridiculous. This isn’t even mean. Not really. Shane should consider himself lucky, really; Ilya is never usually this bad at trash-talking other players. So why is Shane even hurt?
Perhaps it’s the fact that Ilya wrote something about him at all, and Shane only found out because Hayden sent him a screenshot of it. Or maybe it’s the fact that he used the word “boring”, which is an adjective that has been used to describe Shane so many times throughout his life that he’s come to loathe the very letters composing it.
Or, Rozanov creates a fake Twitter account to defend Shane from his haters, and then overcorrects when some fangirls get suspicious about his identity.

“Shane,” Hayden says, his voice firmer now. “I’m gonna text Lily.”
Shane's eyes widen at that name, only now understanding what Hayden's talking about. Because he might not have a girl in Boston, but-
“No, you can't text Lily.”

Shane clenches his jaw.
“Is this about Rozanov?” Hayden asks, face rearranging into something puzzled. “He’s been gone for two weeks now. You can’t let that shit cloud your judgement.”
Chest constricting, Shane exhales sharply. “He’s been gone two weeks, and no one knows where he is.”
OR: right before summer rolls around, Ilya Rozanov disappears.

Ilya never meant for this to get so far. So big.
It had started off with a couple hate tweets here and there. Nothing unusual, every hockey player had haters, especially ones as prominent and talented as him and Hollander.
Ilya never listened to what people on the Internet said. Why should he care what random people behind a screen thought of him? Especially when they were Scott Hunter fans. Or worse, Pike fans.
He thought it was the same for Shane, who barely ever used social media in the first place, let alone look up his name on them to see what people were saying about him. But Ilya was wrong.

Shane knew his body didn’t quite work like everyone else's. He knew he sometimes got too immersed in whatever he was doing to register his bladder until it was almost too late. It had resulted in several close calls and ruined underwear in his earlier years, and despite reaching adulthood and becoming the next hockey prodigy of the generation, it still wasn’t a habit he had fully grown out of. In fact, his brain had decided to evolve in the opposite direction: Shane rarely felt the need to use the bathroom until it was already urgent enough to warrant instant action. Instead he had disciplined himself to ration his water intake and use the bathroom on a safe, regular schedule that left no room for accidents.
