“You’re scared,” he said, his tone gentle but sure.
Belly's face flushed, and she snapped, her hands clenched into fists. “I’m not,” she bit out, her voice sharp. Conrad didn’t back down. “You are,” he said, quieter but firm.
Belly turned away, her gaze falling to the floor. “How can you say that?” she whispered. Conrad stepped forward. “Because you’re still in love with me,” he said, low but certain. Belly let out a short, bitter laugh. “I think that’s a bit conceited,” she said, trying to deflect.
Conrad shook his head. “I disagree,” he said. “I think I’ve been pretty clear about how I feel about you all these years.” Belly finally looked up at him, her eyes vulnerable. “And why is that?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Conrad took a deep breath, closing the distance between them. “Because I’m still in love with you,” he said. “I’m not afraid to hurt your feelings anymore. If it means helping you realize you’ve always been it for me.”

It was there, laying on the floor in the dark, feeling the warmth of him beside her, in her empty house that it came to her. The thoughts circled her brain as she watched the shine of the streetlamp glinting off of her ceiling light above her.
“What if… what if we weren’t friends” She began hesitantly, thoughts still forming.
Conrad’s head turned. “What?”
“No, I don’t mean, we can’t be friends. I mean… What if we weren’t just friends?” She turned her head to look at him too.
“I don’t understand. You said -”
“No, I know what I said. I just mean, what if we could be more than friends, but without hurting anyone”
“...I’m not following”
“If no one knows, then what would the harm be, really? If they don’t know, they can’t be upset by it, or be mad at us, or try to stop us…”
He raised an eyebrow quizzically. “Are you saying, we could be together, just, without telling anyone. Like keep it a secret?”
She let herself think about it for another moment, and then shrugged. “Yeah. Yeah I think I am saying that.”
