Essek freezes. “Are the rest of the Nein aware of this?”
“No.”
“...Why not?”
“I do not intend to fight him. I merely wish to know what item it is that he is so interested in.”
Essek is silent for a long moment, and Caleb’s skin crawls under the intensity of the man’s scrutiny. “What if he decides to fight you?” Essek asks.
“I suspect he won’t,” Caleb replies. There are so many unsaid words that should come after, but they all die on his tongue.
