"Her venerable bows looked bearded": One Piece, Intertextuality, and Moby Dick by ghostwriterofthemachine
Fandoms: One Piece (Anime & Manga), Moby Dick - Herman Melville
23 Dec 2023

Summary
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is a decades-long, sprawling, occasionally unhinged serialized manga, and within that decades-long sprawl there are many, many references.
Herman Melville’s Moby Dick is another overly-long, sprawling, unhinged piece of fiction, thought by some to be the greatest novel in the American canon.
Let's discuss.
Or: 2.6k of meta essay analyzing and unpacking Oda's use of the Moby Dick allusion. Yes, really.

Bookmarker's Notes
rec notes: whitebeard pirates meta! one piece is chock-full of allusions at every level, and trying to go deeper and understand what those allusions might convey beyond the surface is a fascinating endeavour.
standout line: One Piece’s Moby Dick, the ship, is unique in the narrative for how blatant it is. This goes beyond borrowing the name from a real-life place or pirate for a character. This is invoking the entire story of god damn fucking Moby Dick, and slapping it on a ship that looks like a whale with a captain his crew calls Pops. This isn’t by accident, and it isn’t surface level.
book to pair with: moby dick by herman melville, because what else could it be? a refresher never hurts before reading an analysis.

Bookmarker's Notes
rec notes: i love to take kise seriously, and this fic does exactly that, with a bonus helping of all the miracles finding their way post-canon. everyone is wonderfully rendered here with their own distinct characters, each of their paths seems believable, and kise holds the story together as something much more than the comic relief.
standout line: “To play for Kaijou forever.” He saw the frown lines on Kasamatsu's face deepen and forged on. “I am being serious. That's what I wanted. Playing for Kaijou – against Aominechi – against Kurokochi. All of them.”
book to pair with: bridge of clay by markus zusak, for friends and brothers with complicated relationships and diverging interests, and the art of putting bridges back together in one house while the uncertain future waits.

Bookmarker's Notes
rec notes: the death note fic of all time. were i ever to recommend something to a non-fandom friend it would be (and has been) this. it might be the best alternate ending i have ever read, in any context. it has made me cry and sing and cry. death note is a tragedy at its core; this brings the tragedy to the forefront. the author's noelverse is another alternate-ending favourite of mine.
standout line: Across the park, a mass of humanity was solemnly marching in their direction, their voices raised in song: "Tōryanse, tōryanse, koko wa doko no hosomichi ja? Tenjin-sama no hosomichi ja, chitto tōshite kudashanse..."
book to pair with: crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky. yes, i know, it seems on-the-nose, but the psychology, the fear, the themes, and the enduring feeling of unsettledness fit extremely well.

It was practically fable around the office after that: Sam Seaborn, his old friend, and the state of New Hampshire.

Bookmarker's Notes
rec notes: the west wing is set in a big, real world with a lot of regular people populating its corners, and this fic has some great OC voices conveying just how absurd and endearing sam and josh are when they find the real thing.
standout line:Sometime later in the afternoon, Seaborn trudged back by Carter’s office, alone. He had a smudge of mustard on his sleeve and a look on his face that blurred the line between stricken and determination. Distracted enough that he nearly tripped over his own two feet, too. Carter thought it was good to see Wunderkind performing at a rate closer to that of his mere mortal colleagues.
book to pair with: the savage detectives by roberto bolaño, which has the same living-in-pockets, undecided-future, youth-and-friendship, love-for vs career-in themes and has a sprawling cast of outsider characters just as charming and varied as this fic.
