Just like the ATLAS, he and Light were destined to burn. He knew this. He knew it. It was only logical.
People like Light didn’t stay with people like him. Soon they would become asynchronous again, tracing individual orbits that would never meet.
Light would stay here, tethered to the glory, and continue on the trajectory that he had always been destined to.
And L would untether himself again. Searching for another planet to gravitate toward.

“It’s okay, Ryuzaki. We found you, we’re getting you out of here.” The voice pauses. “I’m so sorry it took us this long. I...” An inhale. “Hold still, I’ll take that off.”
Beast swings its leg up blindly in the direction of the voice. It doesn’t hit anything, but there’s an answering yelp. Someone farther away shouts something.
“He’s probably confused,” the voice inside its cell says. “It’s okay, Ryuzaki. It’s me, Light. I’m here to help you.”
Beast growls.

The sun is caressing L’s pale face, bathing him in burning warmth and obscene brightness, lighting him up as a snow on a beautiful winter day, when L tells Light solemnly, “I am going to die, indeed.”
Light, who has prepared three one-litre thermoses of black tea with lemon as of now, looks at him without a trace of amusement, while changing the softest in the world, cotton bedsheets.
“I require love,” L definitely does not whine, and it sounds ridiculous in his deadpan, monotone-ish voice that had turned softer from his profound suffering. Light rolls his eyes and walks out into the sun, approaching him and restraining himself from calling L out on his irritating little lamenting. “I am in a deadly need of attention. You never pay me attention. You are too busy slaughtering people…”

Summary
It was subtle, so very subtle that if L weren't confidently in tune with his own abilities he would have thought he imagined the reaction. His father, Soichiro Yagami, tenderly grasped his sons shoulder. He flinched, Light Yagami flinched. He suppressed his reaction as quickly as he made it. So unbelievably minute that L was determined to re-watch the interaction caught on the surveillance cameras tonight, while his suspect was sound asleep. It was so so small and yet visceral in the detectives eyes. He barely heard the words of support Senior Yagami was giving his son. Such kind words, he didn't doubt Lights innocence for a moment.
So why did he flinch?
