Steve supposes it’s only natural, he’s pieced together that something traumatic had happened to the kid, if Natasha’s report was anything to go by— Found him sitting outside of a HYDRA base in the middle of the woods, she had said, Surrounded by bodies and covered in blood.
Steve isn’t an idiot–he knows what that means, and he knows how taking a life takes a toll on the psyche, even if in self-defense. He’s seen it first hand, nearly every day in the War.

Hange is a stone castle. One that invites its citizens to play in the gardens but never opens its gates. The faux intimacy is a shield that lets others think they’ve crossed the bridge when they haven’t even left the field. They flaunt their emotions on a whim and yet have never spoken of their own past.

He thinks that, clearly, everyone was just trying to hold him down. Stop him from flying. Stop him from breaking free. And so Duke does it—he dives. For about two seconds, it feels good because it’s just him, the water, and the glowing warmth of his own triumph.
