“Well—” There’s a weird look on Wade’s face now. “I don’t know much. It’s just—after the Blip, the city noticed you disappeared. And they noticed that Stark did, too. Just—there were sightings, I guess, of him, after. And us mercs, we know grief when we see it.”
“What do you mean?” Peter prompts, trying and failing to follow.
“I only know what I’m told and what I see with my own eyes, kid,” Wade says, tone very soft indeed. “But—I saw you. And I saw him. And I saw that without you—he wasn’t himself.”
“Get—get to—what are you—what’s your point?”
“He didn’t save the world for just anyone,” Wade says. “He didn’t even save it for everyone. He saved it for you.”
A silence descends. Peter buffers. “Y—you’re saying—”
“Whatever he did,” Wade clarifies, “whatever brought you back, whatever killed him”—here he pauses, looking at Peter like it’s a dangerous thing he’s doing, telling him the truth, and Peter appreciates the sympathy even though he far prefers the apathy—“he did it for you.”//
Peter and Matt spend a day together. It quickly derails once Wade gets involved.
