“What are you, then?” Sirius asks quietly. “Are you… are you like me?”
“No.”
“A man of many words,” Sirius snaps, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I am not a man,” he replies, “nor have I ever been. I am Death.”

“Release him if you want,” Alex says, resigned. “But know that you’re killing me in doing so.”
“He might show you mercy,” Hob offers, but Alex shakes his head. “Have you ever tried speaking with him? Apologising?”
“Both my father and I have tried speaking to him many times,” he says. “He’s never replied.”
Hob looks back at his Stranger.
“Is that so?” he wonders. “And will you not speak to me, either, old Stranger?”
His Stranger cocks his head, eyebrows raising in the slightest, an almost amused tilt to his lips.
“Hello, Hob.”

Remus nods, turning towards the bookcase on the opposite wall, before Mira jumps to her feet.
“I’ll get it, Moony,” she says, gesturing for Remus to take her place on the sofa.

Dream is given a second chance. Terrified by loneliness and drowning in humanity, he goes to find the only fixed point he has ever known. Hob Gadling.
Dream found himself explaining everything, the words tumbling out of him in a halting confession. The Kindly Ones, the choice to end or change. His siblings’ intervention.
“They… found a compromise. This form, it is mortal-adjacent. I must eat, sleep and breathe. I feel the cold. I grow weary.” He looked down at his own hands, pale against the dark fabric of his trousers. “I am, in all ways that matter now, very much like you, Hob Gadling. My body will not age. It cannot die. Unless I choose to accept my sister’s gift. I am… suspended. Between what I was and what men are.”

"He—" Hob cuts himself off, head tilting slightly like the new information needs just a second to process. Dream wonders when he began to find this kind of confusion more endearing than a test of his patience.

Summary
After Dream arrives at their meeting thirty years late and finally ready to admit that they're friends, Hob hesitates to have this meeting end and invites him to see his home. There, Hob learns of Dream's time in captivity, but his attempts at comforting Dream lead to them sleeping together. This starts a relationship where their respective traumas and difficulties to communicate pose challenges, but through efforts on both their parts, they can learn how to be comfortable with one another.
