Meryl can't reconcile within her mind, a seraphic face and the eyes of a sufferer. "Well?" she asks again because she can't help herself. Everyone has a daemon on Gunsmoke, and the absence of one is jarring.

His smile strains. "It's complicated," says Vash, because it always is.

Daemons are part of whatever normalcy has been left of Earth, carried over light centuries by humanity. Records through time on No Man's Land claim that the notorious Humanoid Typhoon, Vash the Stampede, does not, in fact, have one.

    Summary

"One moment Vash was fighting Knives and the next he was walking across a street. The change was so abrupt that it felt like the wind was knocked out of him. He stumbled over himself, falling to his hands and knees in the middle of the crosswalk. He took a gasping breath at the disorientating shift, grasping at his side at where he was impaled to find it lacking a wound. Looking blearily at the asphalt under him, he snapped his head around trying to understand where he was."

-or Vash gets transported to another universe where he lives on earth and everything gets uprooted from there when he has to try to "fit in" into this other Vash's life.

    Summary

His flesh hand drifted over to his left rib cage, tracing over mottled flesh where a soulmark used to be. The area was so marred by scars that the feather-like mark wouldn’t be recognizable even if it were still there. But that mark had faded long ago. What were a few scars over an empty patch of skin?

Vash wasn’t aware he was staring until the priest looked at him and smirked. “Am I that nice to look at, Blondie?”
“Oh, um sorry! I didn’t mean to be rude!” Vash felt his face reddening. “I just thought it was awfully kind of you to spare a prayer for those bandits. Most people never try to talk things out these days.”
“And is that what you were doing?” The priest kicked off of the wall, leaning towards him. “Trying to talk things out with lawless criminals?”
Vash smiled awkwardly. “Yeah… I just thought I’d give them the chance to make things right, you know?”
“Then perhaps it’s fate that we ran into each other,” the priest chuckled. Vash was all too aware of the way his chest shook as he did (why was his shirt unbuttoned so far down? Is that normal for priests these days?). “The name is Wolfwood. Nicholas D. Wolfwood. And you, Needle Noggin?”

    Summary

There was an odd burst of pain from his cheekbones, and Nick was pulling away in a flash, cursing. "What, what?" Did he do something wrong?

"Did ya not feel that?!" A finger was shoved in his face rather accusingly. Sure, he'd felt many things. Idly, he brought a hand up to his cheek, just as Nick fumbled with the bedside lamp.

It was revealed quickly what the problem was. Downy feathers poked out of his cheekbones, around the rims of his eyes. They were this odd navy blue color that seemed terribly familiar.

    He was silent a moment.

    Summary

What they don’t tell you about surviving a near death experience is that it’s a real shit disturber. You don’t get to just get back up and jump around again like nothing changed. Pretty damn near it, physically, in Wolfwood’s case, but mentally? He didn’t think he was a shining example of well-adjusted pre-death, and dying hadn’t done him any favors.
