He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.
A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. “Just—I just have to ask,” she says. Her voice lowers to a whisper, that ever-steady corner of her mouth wavering as her palm envelopes his cheek. “How long have you been hurting?”

Shane wanted to hold Ilya’s hand. He wanted to touch something that wasn’t the edge of the exam table, which he currently had in a white-knuckled grip, fingers curled around the edge. Ilya was worried, and Shane had made a mistake in banishing him, and he felt bad about that, and about the oddly sympathetic way the doctor was looking at him. Shane had never felt comfortable being pitied.
“My knee’s fucked,” Shane continued, a little more flatly; under control. It’s what he’d suspected deep down, after all. “And so I can’t play hockey. I’m done.”

Ren considers it for a second. To be honest, he hadn’t spent much time thinking about that day at all. Yeah, it majorly sucked, but it was just a few shitty hours he had to endure once and then never had to think about again. Once the bruises had vanished, bones had mended, and scars had mostly faded, he never had much cause to really reminisce about that day, nor had there seemed to be much point in it. Why spend his time dwelling on one shitty event in his past when he could focus on more important things, anyway?~A character/trauma study of November 20th, focusing on anniversaries of the day~
