Actually, their first date had been quite nice. They'd gone bowling. So had their second—Sukkot dinner eaten out in Erik's untidy backyard—and their third, where they’d accidentally attended an open mic night at the cryptid co-op bookstore and Erik had realized around the time the Jersey devil had pulled out his harmonica that he was actually having fun.
Their fourth had been a play followed by dinner followed by… dessert, and walking home that night, Erik had found himself thinking that this might be the most successful relationship he’d had since—well, since Charles, the last time.
Of course they'd gotten kidnapped by the Old God cult Erik had been investigating almost immediately afterward. Erik was a seasoned investigator of the occult and uncanny. He didn't believe in jinxes. But he'd jinxed them.
