    Bookmarker's Notes

The night she dies, Gemma Scout leaves behind a dog-eared copy of Poor Folk on the dresser; a half-eaten plate of chicken parmesan in the fridge and a half-finished knitting project on the living room table; a pair of shears on the little cobblestone path out in the garden. All mentally filed under the same notional tab: THINGS TO COME BACK TO.

"I'll keep you updated. In the meantime, go back to sleep. When you need to worry, I'll tell you."

"Heh." Ryland ran his hand down his face. "It's terrible you know that it actually makes me feel better. What would I do without you?"

"Explode at a colleague at a conference and get expelled from academia and become a middle school teacher." Eva said, promptly.

"Wow, you've thought about that way too hard." Ryland laughed. "Middle schoolers might not vape in class, though. Maybe I should switch."

    "Let's not joke."

    Summary

It's a little troubling how familiar this has become, possibly. Kakashi is very aware of what he's doing. Risking. Has risked, past tense, what should probably be an alarming number of times, now. There's a reason he doesn't let any of the other halfway tolerable patrollers accompany him on these paper-thin 'scouting' trips. A reason apart from the way they'd start dropping hints that he's not being safe, being reckless with his life again.

Ha. Hm. No, after giving it appropriate analysis, mostly he's…curious.

    Call it an on-going experiment.

    Summary

"You realize you do not have to compete with me in the zombie apocalypse, Hollander. ESPN is not tracking our zombie kill count.”

Ilya can live with Hollander hurting, as long as Ilya is the one who hurt him. Hollander will feel survivor’s guilt, obviously. He’ll go to the media crying and tell them how brave Ilya was. Their names are going to be linked together forever, and there is nothing Hollander can do about it, and Ilya will not experience any consequences.

Sometimes women tell him that his asshole cover is just a front for insecurity, but it’s okay, because he can put his walls down just for them. These women are wrong. Ilya is just an asshole. Nobody but God can judge him, and He’ll have the opportunity soon.

    --

What if instead of Montreal, their game during episode 4 was in Boston. And instead of having a terrible time at the club, Shane, Ilya, and a bunch of their respective teammates (and the dentist, the referee and the EBUG) have an even worse time barricaded in the dressing room trying to survive a zombie attack. It might be easier if they were on speaking terms—but then, maybe it wouldn't.

They just wanted to play hockey.

SH: We’ve never been safe. We’re never going to be safe. We just wanted to play hockey. But they just want us to play hockey. It’s not the same thing.

    -

“We aren’t fucking dying,” Hollander says louder. “Come on, man, what are you going to do when you get out of here?”

“If I’m not trying to eat brains? Go to fucking confession.”

Hammersmith laughs. “I’m going to fucking retire,” he says. “My wife’s been on me about it for two seasons now. If I’d listened—” He clears his throat. “I’m gonna retire. Finish remodeling the house. Go to, I don’t know, Prague or something. I’ve never taken the kids anywhere that wasn’t for fucking work.”

“Same. I’m quitting my job,” Anna says. “I can’t afford it. I don’t care. Fuck it. I never want to see yoga pants or a spin bike or hear a zumba playlist again. I’m going to sell interviews about being stuck in the Haymarket with you guys.”
    [..]
“I’m going to get really fucking drunk,” Comeau says fervently. “And I’m going to do all the drugs.”

    “Inspirational,” says Hollander.

“Well, what the fuck are you going to do, then?”

    “Win another Stanley Cup. Obviously.”
