Summary
Grian was never meant to be anyone important. That wasn’t to say that he was unattractive or stupid, he was far from it. He had just been unlucky at birth, born to two poor farmers in the midst of a winter war. If you were born a peasant, you would die one. That was just how the world worked back then.
Grian had accepted this fact shortly after he became aware of it. In his mind, there was no point in wasting time thinking about it, and he didn’t feel as though he had a particularly difficult life. After all, his childhood was spent with his four best friends in all the world.
But all good things must come to an end, and it was on the evening of Martyn’s eighteenth birthday that things started to go a bit…wrong.

What's it about? Fencing. Fighting. True love. Strong Hate. Harsh Revenge. A few soldiers. Lots of Morally Grey Characters. Five or Six Terrifying Women. Beasties Monstrous and Gentle. Some Swell Escapes and Captures. Death, Lies, Truth, and Miracles.
In short, it's about everything.

Summary
It is often said that one meets the most interesting people in marketplaces. That in a marketplace, you encounter so many different types of individuals that it is impossible to leave unchanged. That sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll find someone to form a bond with, a friendship to last the ages.
That was certainly true of Grian and Scar.

Grian’s town is not friendly to Others.
Or, Grian can’t stay any longer. He’s lost count of how many times he’s been told that the forest is dangerous, but to be lost is better than to have nowhere to go at all.
