Maddie studied his face. “I think you just have to keep trying. You can’t expect to connect with a kid that fast, biology or not.”

The look in Maddie’s big brown eyes was so loaded, Buck had to turn away. “Every kid is different. Every relationship is different.”
Buck just hummed in response. She was probably right. Buck knew, better than most people, how little biology mattered when it came to feeling like family. But that just left him more adrift when it came to how to handle Theo.
“And what about Eddie?” Maddie’s voice was aggressively unassuming, and she had a gleam in her eye Buck didn’t like.
“What about Eddie?”
