    “I’m happy but I think that we need to establish a baseline of knowledge first. I’ve brought something along with me today,” Dick says, reaching into his bag. Jon swallows, waiting for him to produce either an escrima stick, knife or all of the above. Instead, what he pulls out is a small paperback. It’s got a cartoonish drawing of a boy and girl kissing on the front, the whole thing done in jarringly bright colors. “This is ‘Kylie’s First Kiss’.”

    Jon realizes with the slow-motion that accompanies most horror films that it is a picture book for kissing. There are drawings. There are diagrams, detailing the anatomical structure of the human mouth because somehow that’s prerequisite knowledge for making out.

    Dick begins reading from the first page, unprompted.

    Or: Jon is having the best week of his life after asking his best friend out. If only the members of his boyfriend’s (!!!) family would stop kidnapping him.

    He taps the man's cheek, but the man doesn't so much as twitch, out cold. Damian huffs and shoves the man's hair out of his face so he can get a better look at—

    Damian's heart freezes solid in his chest.

    “Nightwing?” Jason asks from what feels like far, far away. “You good?”

    He's older.

    Damian often ruminates on the fact that this face will never exist, that Tim will forever be seventeen. He's had dreams—the kind that have him waking up with wet cheeks and the feeling that his chest has cracked open while he slept—that his little brother did get to grow up, but there are no faces in dreams.

    It's that reason alone that banishes the suspicion that this might be a dream.

    Timothy Drake is no longer seventeen.

    Timothy Drake is twenty-three and unconscious on the filthy, cold floor of Grandfather's dungeon, tortured and starved and in bloody chains.

    He's really not sure how much this is actually supposed to help- even with the nurse's endorsement from earlier, it sounds fake as hell- but Simon is already an asshole, he can be a sucker today too if it makes Ryland feel less alone.

    He uses his teeth to peel off the patch on his wrist and reaches out slowly, telegraphing each movement as he brushes his scent gland against Ryland’s.

    Ryland is in an accident at work, and with Rocky out of the country the school has to dig into Ryland's file and try his horribly out-of-date secondary emergency contact. Simon doesn't know who just called, but he's just as lonely as Ryland and can't say no to a stranger in need.
