    “Yes.” Max’s voice sharpens. “Enough is enough, Charles. Are you really going to marry him?”
    “Why shouldn’t I?”
    “Just tell me he’s the one,” Max demands, sarcasm dripping. “Tell me he’s the love of your life.”
    “Tell me you don’t love me. Say it. And I’ll leave. And you can go get married.”
    “Don’t do this, Max. I’m begging you…”
    “If you really love him—enough to marry him—then telling me you don’t love me should not be hard.”
