“Something like that.” Hugo pauses for a second, contemplating. Then, “Did you grow up on a farm?”
An incredulous laugh bursts out before Varian can stop it. Because yeah, he did. “You’re supposed to be asking questions about your job.”
“I already know how to do my job.”
“We’ll see.”
“You don’t believe me, Blue?”
“I don’t care,” Varian says. “And my name is Varian.”
“What do your friends call you?”
“I doubt you’ll find out.”

Summary
It's time for Varian's pack to have their monthly full-moon run so the wolves can wreak havoc and get the energy out of their systems without destroying Quirin's furniture. Unfortunately, a wrench is thrown into their plans when two of the wolves get caught in a few rogue hunter's traps.

Dread tails him like a second shadow as they hunt down the rest of the wolves. Varian can’t shake the feeling that something is going to happen. They’ve never had the best luck, especially not with hunters, and the girls are playing with fire roughhousing so close to a hunter’s village known for their specialty of trapping wolves.
It would be insanely lucky for them to come out of this unscathed.

Hugo glares at him over the metal of the muzzle. It’s already tightened around his jaw with the bit in his mouth, preventing him from speaking at all lest he hurt himself. He’s kneeling between Varian’s legs on the floor, hands planted on either side of shorts-clad hips as he looks at Varian like he’s being served on a dinner plate. They hadn’t made it to the bed before Hugo was on him, but Varian reminded him of their bet from earlier—the one that if Varian won, he got to choose what Hugo wore the next time they got some time alone.
Hugo had agreed flippantly, because he’s a presumptuous asshole that likes to underestimate Varian. A fact that is now biting him in the ass, muzzle trapping his jaw shut and a leash pulled tight around his throat.

But the only thing he sees is a flash of blond hair disappear around a corner across the street, leaving what looks to be an apartment complex. Running away; zombies don't run away. Varian's attention narrows down to the building they disappeared behind. Eugene is speaking to him, nudging Varian off the tailgate when he doesn’t jump off himself.
A person running away. Broken window, stolen med kit.
Varian vaguely registers Eugene’s noise of alarm as he bolts after them.

Copper fills his lungs every time he breathes in. It’s in the air, dripping from his hands, running in rivulets down his arms. Pooling around his bare knees where gravel digs into his skin. It’s still warm, smooth instead of sticky.
He wipes his hands on his shorts, leaving fresh red smears on the stains already dried from earlier in the night. “Can you hurry up? It’s cold.”

Summary
His hand skims the familiar divots of a door. He reaches down and feels for the knob. It rattles under his hand, not budging an inch when he tries to turn it. The next door he tries turns up the same result, along with the door after it. Varian lets his hand fall with a sigh.
Down the hall, the sound of Cassandra’s footsteps comes to a stop. “What are you doing?”
“We should probably start looking in rooms. Hugo, do you have your picks?”
No response. Varian slows to a stop, spine stiffening.
“...Hugo?”
Again, nothing. Varian turns around, holding the lighter at arm’s length as he searches behind him for any sign of Hugo. As far as he can see, the room behind him is completely empty. Dread crawls into his throat.
“Cass?” he calls over his shoulder, volume be damned.
“What happened?”
“Did–” Varian takes another few steps, moving the lighter so sharply the flame stutters as he searches around the room. “Did you see where Hugo went?”

The first few times she’d caught sight of one her head had snapped so fast she felt the crack in the first knob of her spine. Her sister always dancing at the edges of her vision, flitting from sight before her eyes could find her, fast and nimble as she always is. Was.
Something small and hard pelts her cheek. Vi flinches with a hiss of surprise, eyes opening to land on an acorn coming to a stop at the toes of her boots. She rubs the skin of her cheek with an annoyed grumble and turns to look in the direction it came from.
A shadow disappears into the space between buildings.

Infected are climbing over the car and pressing against the door as they both try to force it shut. Varian’s sneakers squeak against the flooring as more and more weight slams into the door.
“We need” —Varian yelps as another body colliding into it sends both of them forward an inch— “chairs, or a table, or something–”
“Grab it, I can hold them off.”
“Eugene–”
“Go,” Eugene urges. “I can handle it, just hurry.”
Varian uses his feet braced on the floor to shove himself back against the door, giving Eugene the tiniest bit of leverage before he rushes to grab whatever is closest.
His fingers close around the backrest of a chair, right before he hears Eugene’s sharp cry of “Kid!”

Eugene and Varian are trapped in an abandoned restaurant in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, low on ammo and even lower on hopes to get out of it unscathed.
