“Jesper, Wylan died when he was shot at the church.”
He notes that there’s a faint ringing in his ears, that his friends are staring at him in worry, that his boyfriend is now also staring at him in the intense way he stares at a problem that needs to be solved.
“No, he didn’t,” he says quietly, grasping for his boyfriend’s hand blindly, hoping, praying, that he’ll let him hold on.
He’s vaguely aware of the tears in both Nina and Inej’s eyes, and the way Kaz refuses to look anywhere near any of them, so different to the intense stare that he’s used to.
“Yes, he did, Jes,” Nina says quietly. “Wylan and Matthias died on the same night.” It isn’t lost how she chokes over Matthias’s name, as though speaking it physically hurts her.

Summary
Wylan sucks in a breath, steeling himself and getting his order right in his head before opening the door. The sound of the door must have gotten Jesper’s attention, because he looks up from the machine behind the counter and waves.
“Wylan! Hey, you're back,” he says, grinning at Wylan as if he truly is happy to see him. “Nina, look–” he taps her on the shoulder as Wylan walks over.
Nina, who has just finished serving a customer, swats Jesper’s hand away lightly. “Yes, yes, I see him,” she says with an exasperated eyeroll, making eye contact with Wylan afterwards. She smiles at him. “Hey Wylan, what took you so long– I was stuck with only Jesper for conversation for like four days– it takes its toll on a person.”
Wylan, laughing at Jesper’s feigned offence, responds. “I’m sure he’s lovely company to have.”
“See! I am lovely.” he says to Nina, clearly proud of himself
