He was fine! Neon Leon!
Or, like, he is super fine now. Did some time in the slammer aka therapy. Also spent a night there before he could convince everyone he could be a good turtle again.
Mmm, his therapist said it was cooler when he didn’t make jokes like that.
And, you know, the therapy wasn’t awful. Learned a lot about himself or something. Cause that’s right! He can be taught!
It was stuff like that he could sometimes like, get stuck on stuff in his head. Sometimes. Like, he’ll think something that’s not true. But he won’t get it’s not true at the moment. And that was the hardest part.
So he won’t be thinking something like, “Mmm, food sounds like a good idea right now. But I do have a false belief that I should not eat because I somehow ‘don’t need to.’ Or that it’s ‘not important.’ Or the biggest one of all, that ‘I can do what I want cause I control what happens to me and nobody else not Splinter not Raph not Draxum and absolutely no stupid Shredder.”
No. The tricky part was that it wasn’t a thought, but a feeling.
A good feeling. But it secretly wasn’t.
Leo could spot false words a mile away. But, this was trickier. He was accidentally fooling himself.

Here's how Leo sees it.
There are levels to innocence, or whatever, different ways of categorizing it — attribute them to different stages of life, maybe. And being locked in a prison dimension with a squishy pink alien bastard who has a very big grudge against you, with all the means and all the time in the universe to exact vengeance on you, means that inevitably: through the medium of spilled guts and the existential horror of eternity, you're going to lose some of that innocence. Have it clawed out, inch by inch of bloodied scales, mile by mile of empty black space.
(It's whatever, okay? Leo knew what he was doing when he threw himself in there, really, he did, he just… never really thought he'd have to reckon with its consequences in a tangible reality.)

“Can I ask you a question?”
Shadow blinks his eyes and turns to her, glancing behind him like he’s going to be able to see the quills still coated with conditioner. It catches on his urge to avoid. “You trapped me,” he accuses.
Maddie just laughs, smiling at him. “You got me,” she says, raising her hands guiltily. “You don’t have to answer it, though. It’s your choice.”
He narrows his eyes at her suspiciously, searching her face. She just tips her head at him. “What.”
She gestures, and he closes his eyes again, flattening his ears on his head so she can resume washing out his fur. “Why are you so dead set on leaving us?” She hums the question casually, tone straight, like the answer doesn’t matter to her. Like he’s not going to get in trouble for answering. It’s a dangerous tone; It can’t be trusted.
Shadow is quiet for a few seconds, searching for the safest answer. “I don’t belong here,” he eventually settles on.
