“...Right,” Jean mumbles, mostly to herself. She sighs, shifting the conversation. “How are the new recruits faring under the Fifth Company? Training is going well, I take it?”
Lohen hums, running a gloved hand through his wind-tousled hair. He has a mischievous look on his face, which really tells Jean everything she should know. “Eh, they’re a little bit squirmy, so I put them through… ah, just a few tests, if you may call it that. Builds character, you know.”
“Did you poison their food again?”
“Yeah.”

The singer’s eyes caught on a spot above him, as if he was a sun too burning to stare at. Beside her, Mitya stared at him without a smile. His thumb rubbed at his left palm absent-mindedly, tracing an invisible pattern. His third hand poked at his shoulder fruitlessly, then gave up, limping at his side.

Summary
Lohen's antics and eccentric behavior results in the rank of Vice-Captain being stripped from him. After going awol, Varka is concerned, along with Illuga, who only meets the rogue ex-vice-captain once and can see the hurt deep inside. This leads to the awol knight taking on the role of a Lightkeeper on Illuga's squad, but bad luck and a bad reputation follows him. It seems as though only his new Captain has the heart and the words to convince him he's worth more than a title.
