It was shocking to hear herself speaking so frankly. Mika had learned long ago how to tell people what they wanted to hear, or at least to prevent herself from saying the things people very much did not want to hear. Her mother would never, ever hear from Mika’s mouth how much she struggled to make friends before she’d decided to remake herself into the shape of someone who might finally be loved. Mitsumi would never know about the small fountain of jealous resentment that still burbled away in the back of Mika’s mind. And no one, ever, could know about the way Mika still heard a voice in the back of her head telling her that her body would never be enough, no matter what she did to it.
But maybe Nao-san could.

What was left unsaid—deliberately, Seungcheol now sees—is that even if they were all good enough to make it, even if some outside trainees popped in to swell the ranks of the show enough to create some suspense, it wouldn’t matter. The simple math of it just didn’t add up. Fifteen Pledis trainees. Thirteen spots in the group. Two people that Seungcheol had spent his every waking moment with for years on end, left out in the cold, more if the singular outside trainee who’d made it to the final round was able to snag a spot in the debut lineup.

She’s been pissed, felt the fires of anger licking up her windpipe, since an hour ago, when Wonyoung wandered away from her and into the orbit of some 6’3” loser who keeps leaning in closer and closer, now daring to play with the ends of Wonyoung’s hair.
Wonyoung is smiling up at said loser the same way she’d smiled at Yujin yesterday as she wound a lock of Wonyoung’s hair around her finger. Right before she’d leaned in for a kiss. Soft and sweet and familiar, like they’d done it a hundred times, because they had.

Summary
The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)
